In honor of Coming Out Day 1999
This page has been created to celebrate Coming Out Day 1999, which takes place on Monday, October 11th. Coming Out Day is, for many, a deadline of sorts. It is a day when we, as Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals borrow strength from one another in order to collectively take the first step in a life-long process of facing our lives and the people in them on our own terms. "Coming out" doesn't happen in a day. It is a journey of discovery where we daily grow into ourselves and our identities, and cast off the conventions and condemnation which we previously were made to feel compelled to live under. It is not about comfort, or ease, but about PRIDE; in ourselves, our lifestyles, and our community. It is about learning to live unashamed of who we are, the choices we make, and the people we love. It is about hope, and help, and healing. On this page, you will find the stories of some of us that have begun that process, as well as some of the creative efforts born from the hearts of those going through it. Please take time to view the offerings here. There is wisdom here, along with folly and heartache and triumph. Most of all, though, there is dignity, and dedication to premise that we don't need to hide ourselves away from the world, but rather will stand up and be counted.
